Overview of 25 Years of Pro-Life Work by Christian Life Resources

Although CLR's 25th anniversary year is officially at an end, I feel compelled to reflect one more time on a special aspect of our history.The pro-life ministry of CLR began with a network of pregnancy counseling centers that were scattered throughout the Midwest.As time passed, more ministries were started and new programs were developed. Yet the core ministry of these centers remained the same – to provide free pregnancy tests and counseling for those facing an unexpected pregnancy.
To demonstrate the opportunities within this ministry, and the blessings that have been realized, here are some interesting statistics:
Over 114,000 people have walked into one of our centers over the last quarter century;
Nearly 18,000 of those people were unchurched and many others claimed membership in non-Christian churches;
Through enhanced technology, we work with hundreds of other people each year by way of websites and email counseling.
Clearly, we work with a large group of people who deal with some serious problems.We try to help them with their problems, but the real benefit of this ministry is found in sharing the Gospel with them.For instance, we provide free pregnancy tests, but we also tell them about the free gift of salvation already won for us through Christ.We provide pamphlets on fetal development, but also hand out materials on baptism.We show compassion to those who are scared or confused, but we also share the comfort that is found in Jesus Christ.To me, these are some of the greatest blessings that we can highlight from the past 25 years, and when reflecting on the numbers listed above, one realizes just how often that Gospel comfort is shared.
As I look back, I certainly recognize these tremendous blessings, but I am also aware of current and future hurdles to overcome.For example, a free pregnancy test is no longer as appealing as in the past since every pharmacy and dollar store now sells them.In order to survive, our centers made some adjustments, so now, in addition to free pregnancy tests, many of them offer free baby clothes, diapers, and cribs to assist women who have decided to keep their babies.Some centers also offer mentoring programs and financial planning to help these young mothers become more effective at raising their children.These new programs offer practical assistance and build relationships in the process.When considering that one out of five visitors is a non-Christian, one recognizes the importance of this ministry to continue reaching out with the precious Gospel.
As I look back, I see many blessings that God has showered on this ministry.I am also thankful for the 800 volunteers who give of their time and talents to making these centers work effectively.If you would like to learn more about this vibrant ministry, contact the Christian Life Resources office.
