This is an overview of the information in The Christian and Birth Control book, published by Christian Life Resources. To purchase the book click on the link at the bottom of this page. Vaccines: It is for the cause of convenience that there has been much interest in vaccines which essentially "immunize" against pregnancy. The ideal is to find the vaccine which, upon injection, prevents fertilization. The reality is that, so far, the results have been less thatn satisfactory although the quest continues. Also see information on current injectable birth controls such as Depo-Provera, Cyclo-Provera, and Norplant Quinacrine: Quinacrine was originally used to treat malaria in World War II. Doctors discovered that it also caused the scarring of tissue. By inserting several small pills into the top of the uterus, scar tissue is created in the upper womb and at the entrance to the fallopian tubes. This blocks the tubes and prevents passage of sperm into those tubes where fertilization typically takes place. Other Methods: The Today Sponge - The Today Sponge, which was withdrawn from the U.S. market in 1995, was approved for sale in the American retail market by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2005. The contraceptive will be available in the summer through a company website and in the fall in retail drug stores. Other Methods: Contraceptive Patch - The contraceptive patch, Ortho Evra, is now on the market after its FDA approval in 2001.Other Methods: General - A report is expected to be released by the Institute of Medicine, an independent research arm of the National Academy of Sciences, in 2004 with recommendations for contraceptive development. Among the possible high high-tech approaches/techniques: 1) Enabling an egg, perhaps by disabling proteins on the egg's surface, to block sperm penetration; 2) Preventing maturation of a specific sperm protein in order to prevent fertilization of an egg (a reversible male method pill is being developed by the Population Council, New York); 3) Preventing sperm from traveling up through the uterus to the fallopian tubes (several birth control types are being worked on including a pill, implant, and vaginal ring); 4) Inhibiting egg release from an egg follicle in the ovaries. The FDA Consumer reports that development of spermicidal as well as microbicidal birth control methods continues to prevent not only pregnancy but also tranmission of HIV and other STDs (sexually-transmitted diseases).
