Copehagen, Denmark -- A study in Greenland has revealed that one in two pregnancies on the North Atlantic island ended in abortion in 2000 and 2001, Danish and Greenland media reported Friday.
Health authorities in Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, registered 944 abortions in 2000 and 809 in 2001, compared to 887and 936 births respectively.
"Almost one pregnancy in two ends in abortion," said nurse Marianne Amfjord, who works at a clinic in the capital Nuuk and who is co-author of the study together with her colleagues Birte Kristensen, Turid Bjarnasson and professor Peter Bjerregaard.
"We need an information campaign throughout the country, in schools and across society," Amfjord told Greenland radio.
Bishop Sofie Petersen called for an urgent debate on ethics and said she hoped the issue could be discussed openly.
"We are guilty of this mentality where we throw away children the way we throw away old toys," she told Danish daily Berlingske Tidende on Friday.
According to Petersen, the high abortion rate -- one of the highest in the world -- is a sign that Greenlanders prefer to stick their heads in the sand when it comes to problems affecting their society, such as suicides and children abandoned by their parents.
Some 45,000 Inuits and 10,000 Danes live in Greenland, which has been autonomous since 1979.
