You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. - Psalm 16:11

Healthcare Reform and the Christian Perspective

A considerable amount of debate has taken place lately on the benefits of reforming the healthcare system in the United States. Many people agree that reform is needed, but not everyone agrees on the details. Christian Life Resources has not taken a position on the concept of healthcare reform, but we are deeply concerned about any changes that support, encourage or fund policies that promote abortion or euthanasia.

In the first half of 2009, CLR and other pro-life organizations had made resources available to educate individuals on the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). There was serious concern that FOCA would become law in becoming the most radical pro-abortion legislation to have been considered in this country. Fortunately the collective effort was successful in educating people, and many legislators heard the concerns from their constituents. We believe that FOCA has not been introduced this legislative session because of the increased awareness of its full impact.

We have, however, noticed a rather covert move in the past few weeks. The promoters of healthcare reform have subtly added some of FOCA’s components into the current legislation. In fact, the current legislation goes far beyond the abortion issue and threatens life at both ends of the spectrum. Here are some examples:

  • Federally mandate insurance coverage of abortion on demand;
  • Provide massive federal subsidies for abortion;
  • Mandate the creation of many new abortion clinics;
  • Nullify at least some state limitations on abortion;
  • Promote end-of-life counseling that covers the “continuum of end-of-life services.”
  • Anyone who is unsure about the true intent of this legislation can watch the various partnerships that have emerged. For example, Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, joined Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and other Senators at a Capitol Hill press conference to mark the advancement of major healthcare legislation in a key Senate Committee. Ms. Keenan, as a strong abortion advocate, is happy with the progress of healthcare reform and its support for the advancement of abortion services and promotion.

    Regardless of your personal opinion about healthcare reform, you should certainly be opposed to any portion of this legislation that promotes abortion or euthanasia. You need to tell people, and especially your legislators, that healthcare reform should lead to the enhancement of the life and health of American citizens. Any proposal that promotes killing the unborn, elderly or disabled is unacceptable.
