The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. - Mark 10:45

In Memory of Helen Stippick and Pastor Robert J. Voss

Rev. Robert Fleischmann, CLR National Director
Clearly Caring Magazine, 2nd Quarter 2009, Vol. 29, No. 2

In a previous issue of Clearly Caring, I recalled how Christian Life Resources began as local group and a single pregnancy counseling center in Illinois. Mr. Larry Marquardt served as the visionary behind that early effort, surrounding himself with people of passion and conviction to help move the ministry forward.

Larry tapped the talents of two very important people in those first years. Helen Stippick served as a counselor, as well as the full-time office manager at the first pregnancy counseling center in Palatine, Illinois. Pastor Robert J. Voss, Mr.Marquardt’s pastor in Libertyville, Illinois, also served on the first national board of what is today called Christian Life Resources.

During the first quarter of 2009 God called these faithful servants home to heaven. As with all deaths it gives us cause to celebrate those whom God uses to do wonderful things for His people.

Helen conducted many of the first counseling sessions at the Illinois/Indiana center and encouraged many women to choose life over abortion for their children. She trained many of the early counselors who served throughout the country. Clearly, her influence cannot be overstated.

Helen also participated on the counselor team in creating the first official national counselors handbook. Her patient insistence in getting the facts right also conveyed a compassionate heart.

Helen’s friends recall her sitting with girls in the hospital as they prepared for delivery. She worked tirelessly in saving the lives of those babies. She acted like a mother to those women who faced an unexpected pregnancy.

My first contact with Pastor Voss changed the course of my life. I graduated from the seminary in 1983 vowing to focus only on my mission congregation. Within a month Pastor Voss contacted me and asked if I would edit the organization’s newsletter and attend its monthly board meetings. He was compelling. After all, how could I say “no” to the cause of protecting those who cannot speak for themselves?

Pastor Voss allowed the organization the use of the church office in Libertyville as its first “headquarters.” Later, when the office moved into my parsonage basement in Plymouth, Wisconsin, Pastor Voss – with his sound judgment, passion for this ministry and wonderful sense of humor – became a confidant for me as we handled the increased challenges of a growing organization.

We thank God for Helen Stippick and Pastor Voss. They taught us many lessons of service to the Lord, lived their faith and now enjoy the salvation earned by Christ.

These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. (Revelation 7:14-17).
