SERVING OUR COUNTRY: Wanting to Serve (An Interview with Dr. Thomas Luetzow)
Clearly Caring Magazine, Sept/Oct 2008, Vol. 28, No. 5This article focuses on a political hopeful.* Dr. Thomas Luetzow, a physician and member of the 2008 national board for Christian Life Resources, announced his candidacy to represent the 37th District in the Wisconsin State Assembly. In answer to similar questions given to other politicians is a summary of Luetzow's responses:
"I am a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ixonia, Wisconsin, where I have served as chairman for the Board of Evangelism and also served on the Board of Elders. On a professional level, I have served as chair for the Wisconsin Medical Society Board of Directors and president of the Wisconsin American College of Emergency Physicians three times."
In answer to the reason why Dr. Luetzow made the decision to run for office, he replied, "I decided to pursue political office because it seemed a natural extension as a physician to also care for people legislatively. In study of The People's Bible; Ezekiel and Jeremiah, God repeatedly emphasized the importance and responsibility of Godly leaders. My pursuit is consistent with the Christian mission: Christian leaders are God's representatives and serve at His pleasure. His emphasis on good-Godly leaders is what builds my enthusiasm."
What benefit does Dr. Luetzow see in a Christian's involvement in the political arena? He answered: "Christian values serve all people well. On the other hand, we all know that the devil works hardest to discredit Christian leaders and cause public sins. God instructs us to support and encourage all leaders since they are His representatives."
Luetzow feels the Christian-based ideals instituted by America's founding fathers have been displaced with those that encourage a humanistic approach to government. "The greatest issue which faces our nation and what should be of particular concern to Christians is our country was founded on Christian principles which are now being replaced by human reasoning. This is partly why I decided to run for District 37 of the State Assembly. Faith determines values that influence political thought. To those who feel my faith and their politics should be separate, I recognize that this is not a religious office, therefore the distinction is necessary."
Despite the high personal stakes for candidates who enter the political arena, Dr. Luetzow remains optimistic about the possibility of serving as a state lawmaker, "At the moment, I have the flexibility of work and time and the timing was right. Responses from citizens have been positive and overwhelming. If I had more time I would like to meet everyone, but in reality I am not able to do so. My family is hopeful it will not consume me of my valuable family time."
* EDITOR'S NOTE: Dr. Luetzow was defeated in the September 2008 election for the state Assembly seat.
