The Abortion-Breast Cancer Link
Beginnings, October 1997I’m sure by now you have heard all the talk about the abortion-breast cancer link. . . or have you? Surprisingly, very little has been reported in the media about this link - a link that is considered to be the most avoidable risk for breast cancer. Why? Well, we’re talking about abortion being unsafe and very deadly.
Scientists have discovered that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer by at least 30 percent. Some studies have reported an increased risk of 150%! In 1996, Dr. Joel Brind, a professor of biology and endocrinology at New York’s Baruch College, published an analysis of worldwide studies of the abortion-breast cancer link. It concludes that an abortion significantly increases a woman’s overall risk of breast cancer. The results were consistent across population, ethnic, dietary, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. In addition, as women who have had abortions reach the age when breast cancer normally appears, the effect may increase dramatically. It has also been shown that carrying a pregnancy to term will lower a woman’s risk of the cancer. In fact, a study done on women who have had breast cancer found that not only does carrying a pregnancy to term not increase their risk of a recurrence, it actually lowers their death rate.
One study done specifically on black women states that black teens have double the abortion rate of white teens, which may explain the higher breast cancer rate among blacks. In addition, black women of age 50 and above who had at least one induced abortion have an increased risk of breast cancer of 370%. In other words, black women who have had an abortion have a 56% risk of getting breast cancer in their lifetime.
Eighteen studies have been done on induced abortion and breast cancer which have achieved a 95% confidence level. Just one study reported that induced abortion decreases the risk of breast cancer. While the other 17 studies have reported that induced abortion increases the risk of breast cancer. Unfortunately for those unknowing women considering abortion, the media chose to report on the one out of 18 that showed abortion would decrease your chances of getting breast cancer.
Women are not being warned of a possible abortion breast cancer link and the risk involved. Only in a few states are doctors required by law to explain the risks to their patients. Pro-abortion advocates claim the link has not been proven conclusively. However, once a medical procedure has a conceivable risk, patients must be warned. According to Dr. Brind, a woman has 300 times the risk of death by having an induced abortion instead of giving birth. Abortion is typically an elective procedure, proper patient care demands women are informed that abortion is a significant risk factor for breast cancer.
The 1973 Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion was based on the presumption that abortion was safe, if not safer than childbirth, for women. Undoubtedly, these statistics show that this is clearly not the case.
