Rolls back taxpayer funding for abortion under state employees’ health plans

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker

Earlier today Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signed AB 128 into law, ensuring that no taxpayer dollars pay for elective abortions under state employees’ health plans. “Wisconsin Right to Life has been waiting 23 years for this major step to roll back taxpayer funding for abortion,” said Heather Weininger, Executive Director of Wisconsin Right to Life, “and we are very happy to see this long-awaited legislation signed into law.”

The State Assembly passed AB 128 last November while the State Senate passed the bill this past February.

Despite Wisconsin law prohibiting taxpayer subsidization of elective abortions, there have been no limits on abortion coverage for state employees’ health plans since 1995.

“We thank bill authors Sen. Dave Craig, Rep. Andre Jacque, Rep. Ron Tusler, and Rep. Janel Brandtjen for their leadership on this bill, and we thank Gov. Walker for signing it into law,” continued Weininger. “This law significantly protects taxpayers’ rights, since no one should be forced to subsidize the taking of innocent human life.”
